Online Class:
Self-Initiated Learning
Through Book Study
Instructors: Ashley Smith and Brooke Schmidt
Book studies can be powerful vehicles for professional learning. Reading a professional book and taking the steps to implement ideas presented is educationally valuable. The ultimate goal of a book study is to increase educator’s knowledge and to assist students in reaching high levels of achievement. Students work with the instructor to select a book to read and then report back on what is learned and changes that are made in their classroom. This course can be completed as an individual or with a group and provides a structure to earn credit for the time and effort dedicated to improving K-12 education.
By the end of this course students will:
Evaluate their current teaching practice, identify an area that needs growth and find a quality book on that topic
Read the book and other online resources to gain a well-rounded understanding
Identify key steps needed to implement the learning in the book and put it into practice
Reflect back the success of the implementation and set goals for the future
For K-12 Teachers

Student Testimonials:
I feel like the impact on my knowledge about this subject has been huge this school year. I have gained a better understanding about the topic in general, and I have already started incorporating specific aspects of this practice into my work. I also feel that I can support my students in their learning in so many more ways. I hope to put into practice many of the principles that I have learned from reading this book.

I learned so much from this book but most importantly I learned the tools to identify skills my students need to learn, how to talk to them about it and do it in a collaborative way. I learned different tactics to gather information about the unsolved problem and that it doesn’t take away from my role as their teacher. This book inspired me to be a better teacher through building collaborative relationships with my students.

This course was highly practical and will support my learning over the coming school year and beyond. Thanks!

Thank you so much! I got a ton out of this experience and have plenty more to say about this book! Thank you again for your help.

...I am also very happy I took the time to also take this class because I wouldn’t have dove this deeply into this book without having to really examine what this book was about and write a paper about it. It has changed me, for the better, as a teacher.
