It feels harder than ever for teachers to build a healthy work/life balance. The risk of teacher burn-out is real. In this course we will use the framework of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs to systematically learn about the various levels of daily self-care that a person needs to be able to be fully present and effective when caring for others. You will become familiar with numerous strategies and get to select ones that you want to implement in your life. By the end of the course you will be well on your way to establishing new habits that will allow you to be the best version of yourself in the classroom as well as all the other areas of your life. Thank you so much for putting the class together. I thoroughly enjoyed my time engaging with the text and the other resources you provided. I have felt a weight slowly being lifted off my shoulders since starting this class.

Through these lessons I have been able to grow as an individual. I feel better equipped to take care of myself and in turn be a better teacher for my students. My initial goal was to figure out how to manage my mental and physical health to prevent myself from burning out. I feel that I was able to find different ways of achieving each of the different needs. Throughout taking this class, I have not felt the level of burnout that I was at in Fall of 2024. I am very thankful to be able to walk into my classroom; throughout my day, with a clear mind. I have had more moments of self-actualization. I can now identify how it feels to be building towards transcendence.
This class has given me the tools and helped me understand myself on a deeper level. I know I am not the best teacher I can be when I am too stressed. I now have the tools and practice to be able to take a step back and analyze what I am missing. Instead of searching the internet to figure out the best ways for me to distress, I now have a list and a plan. What's even better is that there are parts of this plan that I can implement throughout the school day! I am most excited to share some of my own stress relief ideas with my students.

This class has helped me identify specific strategies that I can realistically apply in my classroom and in my personal life. I’ve also come to see that modeling self-care for my students helps them develop their own healthy habits, creating a more positive and productive classroom environment for everyone. The next step I’m most excited to take is integrating more self-care moments into my classroom. This month is our character trait gratitude and it lends itself very easily to these practices. For example, today students filled out a graphic organizer detailing basic needs that are important to them, people that are important to them, and ways that manage stress. I filled one out as well, and put it on my own bulletin board. This class has truly inspired me to view self-care not as a luxury, but as an essential part of both being a human and a teacher.

When I started this course, my main goal was to find a way to stay in this profession without burning out completely. That goal hasn’t changed, but it’s gotten clearer — I now understand that self-care isn’t a luxury or a weekend thing, it’s something I have to build into my day-to-day life.
This course gave me tools I didn’t even know I needed — permission to pause, practical strategies to reset, and reminders that I’m not alone in how I feel. The next step I’m most excited about is continuing to create systems that protect my energy — small routines, clear boundaries, and space for real connection.

This course has shifted my approach from just learning strategies to actively practicing and remembering them by setting reminders in my phone. I now see self care as a consistent practice that helps me maintain both my physical and mental health. Because of what I have learned here, I feel better equipped to manage stress, connect more clearly with my students, and support them with greater empathy. Moving forward, I am most excited to extend the same empathy I give myself to others, staying present and positive at school and at home.
