Online Class:

Restorative Practices in the Classroom

Instructor: Krista Geffre

Relationships are at the heart of learning and success in school and life beyond. However, many of our students come to us without the skills to build and maintain positive relationships. Teachers are often trapped in the cycle of rewards and punishments but there is a meaningful solution to these problems: Restorative Practices.  Restorative practices are based on restorative justice, the approach of repairing the harm done to people and relationships instead just punishing the offender.

Through this course, you will learn how to apply the concepts of restorative practices in their classroom to build relationships with and among students and also respond when problems arise that helps students to repair relationships and strengthen classroom community.  This course will give you simple and effective tools and strategies to implement right away!

Student Testimonials:

There are a few things that really stand out to me as beneficial aspects of this class. First, I appreciate the amount of resources that the syllabus and assignments had available in addition to the book. I enjoyed reading them and watching the videos. I also appreciated being able to go back and reference them as I continue my work on implementing restorative practices in my school.

I also appreciate how the assignments guided me to think and be reflective of the information I was learning from and being exposed to and then having a chance to connect it to my work. This is exactly what I hoped to do after taking the class. I am thankful for the time and accountability to be able to work through it as I went from assignment to assignment. Not to mention the fact that as a 2 credit class I was able to pick some assignments that stood out to me as great ways to connect to my current school role.

I appreciate the flexibility of this course and the entire process from start to finish. As a working educator, this was a great educational experience that made me consider jumping into another course. Thank you.

Restorative Practices In the Classroom was one of the best classes I have taken in regards to building positive relationships with students.  I have learned so much about guiding students to not only build stronger relationships but also how to repair relationships.

I have also recognized more fully the gifts I have to teach. I do love teaching, and if I can stay the course with my self-care then I can continue teaching. I honestly thought this was my last year, but this course proved to give me something I never planned on - a new view of myself and the realization that I still have the ability to be resilient. I realize that I am not totally burned out or totally demoralized. I have hope for the next generation, and I can help shape them. I have hope in myself as a teacher.

I found this course to be refreshing, exciting and sort of a “missing piece to the puzzle,” if you will. The perspective I’ve gained about using restorative practices with students and in other relationships is highly valuable. The text, Better Than Carrots or Sticks, is well written and full of great information that can be used both in and out of the classroom. I found many of the online links to articles just as helpful. Thank you for taking the time to create a meaningful course that will no doubt improve my experiences and interactions as I move forward in my teaching career. This course truly exceeded my expectations. Thank you!

What I found most beneficial in this class is that every assignment was action oriented. I saw how each piece of learning could be addressed in my own classroom. I felt like I had many strategies and created a lot of things for my classroom space that allowed me to build more authentic relationships with my students. This also led to higher achievement for them. I appreciated assignments that were structured around taking this piece of the text and trying it out directly in your classroom. It made me actually practice things instead of just saying cool! And then never trying it. It felt like applied PD. This class did meet my expectations! I felt like there were a variety of learning opportunities that were aligned with course goals. I feel like I am leaving a better teacher with identified steps to make my classroom environment better for each and every student.

I found so many resources helpful throughout this class. I especially appreciated the open-ended style of assignments so that I could peruse through the book and websites in a way that fit my professional needs. For example, there was an article on introducing students to a study on their brains which I was able to partially integrate into a current unit about the nervous system. I also received useful feedback on items pertaining to my current setting (like how to publish student work using Canvas during comprehensive distance learning). This course exceeded my expectations. I learned about restorative practices as well as heard a number of school examples, and gathered many tools to instantly implement into my own classroom. The course was great! Thank you.

This course and the textbook couldn’t have come at a better time and place, (online learning, and an over seasoned veteran teacher in a year full of obstacles.) Writing my thoughts on paper and thinking about teaching got me a little more excited about teaching, (I haven’t taken a class in some time.) The course also got me thinking about my relationships outside of the classroom, (my wife and kids,) and how my family deals with conflict. Thank you for giving me this opportunity.
