Intentional Technology:

Focus on Learning (NEW)

Instructor: Krista Geffre

Are your students engaged in learning or are they engaged with their device? In this course, you will understand how to use technology to enhance, extend, or engage learning. You will learn how to evaluate technology to determine if the tech is effectively supporting student learning outcomes. Upon completing this course you will confidently be able to choose and implement technology that will add value to student learning.

This course is perfect for all K-12 teachers and instructional coaches looking to better understand the role that technology can play in effective teaching and learning. Teachers with access to any level of technology will benefit from this course whether you have 1:1 technology or not, use iPads, Chromebooks, or something else entirely, this course is for you!

Participants will benefit from whatever technology you have access to whether you are a 1:1 district, use Chromebooks, iPads, or something else.

You may choose three or four credits for this course. The three credit option focuses on analyzing and evaluating the use of technology to support student learning and the four and five credit options include the text Integrating Technology in the Classroom which highlights specific technology and application use in the classroom.

Student Testimonial:

I appreciated this class as it allowed me to be pushed in my thinking, but not so much that it made me feel guilty for not incorporating more technology. It provided realistic lessons from teachers, applications that could be used in several content areas, and a timeline that allowed me to work on it when I had time.

For me the most beneficial pieces of the course are the rubric to look at the effectiveness of technology and all of the different examples of different technologies for different groups of students. It is beneficial to have both of those different pieces to help improve my work as an educator. I also enjoyed reading the different examples of the teachers who have tried to do different things in their classrooms. It gives me the courage to dive in and try new things that will help my students. I think as educators we fall back into our habits of teaching easy things we already know how to do. This class truly gives me some inspiration to get out there and try some new things.

This class was absolutely invaluable. Moving forward, I will not look at technology with the same lens. I will evaluate what my students are doing on the computer with that very simple rubric that you shared. Most importantly, I find it hard to believe that those who are approving our apps that we can use in our classrooms, and our technology coaches are not scrambling to take your class. It is truly a shame that this is not required. Thank you again for offering classes that are relevant, and powerful. I will continue to grow and change as an educator as I continue to take your courses.

Taking this course has helped me by making me more aware of how the technology I currently use/will use in the future needs to be both engaging, and keep students on task and focused on the learning target. It was also reinforced that technology should be used to enhance teaching, not to replace it; teachers still need to have strong instruction, after that they can incorporate technology to reinforce or extend what was taught.

I especially enjoyed reading about how teachers in the field have used technology in their lessons and learning about all the different websites and apps that are available. The triple E framework was also important and I am glad to have a rubric to go off of when planning for the use of technology in my classroom.
